POSSIBLE CAUSE

P0117

  • Harness or connectors (The sensor circuit is open or shorted.)

  • Engine coolant temperature sensor

P0118

  • Harness or connectors (The sensor circuit is open or shorted.)

  • Engine coolant temperature sensor

FAIL-SAFE

Engine operating condition in fail-safe mode
Fail safe mode Nissan Murano Vehicle behavior
Engine coolant temperature sensor circuit

Engine coolant temperature will be determined by ECM based on the following condition.

CONSULT displays the engine coolant temperature decided by ECM.
Condition

Engine coolant temperature decided

(CONSULT display)
Just as ignition switch is turned ON or START 40°C (104°F)
Approx 4 minutes or more after engine starting 80°C (176°F)
Except as shown above

40 - 80°C (104 - 176°F)

(Depends on the time)
When the fail-safe system for engine coolant temperature sensor is activated, the cooling fan operates while engine is running.
DTC Confirmation Procedure

PRECONDITIONING

If DTC Confirmation Procedure has been previously conducted, always perform the following before conducting the next test.

  1. Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.

  2. Turn ignition switch ON.

  3. Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.

>>

GO TO 2.

PERFORM DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE

  1. Turn ignition switch ON and wait at least 5 seconds.

  2. Check DTC.

Is DTC detected?

YES>>

Proceed to Diagnosis Procedure.

NO>>

To check malfunction symptom before repair: Refer to Intermittent Incident.

NO>>

Confirmation after repair: INSPECTION END

Diagnosis Procedure

CHECK ECT SENSOR POWER SUPPLY

  1. Disconnect engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor harness connector.

  2. Turn ignition switch ON.

  3. Check the voltage between ECT sensor harness connector and ground.

    ECT sensor Ground Voltage
    Connector Terminal
    F11 1 Ground Approx. 5 V

Is the inspection result normal?

YES>>

GO TO 2.

NO>>

Repair open circuit, short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.

CHECK ECT SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT

  1. Turn ignition switch OFF.

  2. Disconnect ECM harness connector.

  3. Check the continuity between ECT sensor harness connector and ECM harness connector.

    ECT sensor ECM Continuity
    Connector Terminal Connector Terminal
    F11 2 F78 35 Existed
  4. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power.

Is the inspection result normal?

YES>>

GO TO 3.

NO>>

Repair open circuit, short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.

CHECK ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR

Check engine coolant temperature sensor. Refer to Component Inspection.

Is the inspection result normal?

YES>>

INSPECTION END

NO>>

Replace engine coolant temperature sensor. Refer to Exploded View.

Component Inspection

CHECK ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR

  1. Turn ignition switch OFF.

  2. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor harness connector.

  3. Remove engine coolant temperature sensor. Refer to Exploded View.

  4. Check resistance between engine coolant temperature sensor terminals as per the following.

ECT sensor Condition Resistance (kΩ)
+
Terminal
1 2 Temperature [°C (°F)] 20 (68) 2.37 - 2.63
50 (122) 0.68 - 1.00
90 (194) 0.236 - 0.260

Is the inspection result normal?

YES>>

INSPECTION END

NO>>

Replace engine coolant temperature sensor. Refer to Exploded View.
